Last weekend i had the opportunity to take behind the scenes photos of actors getting ready for the premiere of their play. The particularity: the actors were students of Atheneum Brussel. Seventeen kids between twelve and seventeen years old worked a few months under the guidance of  Veronique Vander Gucht (direction, choreography, text and concept). They gathered and shared their thoughts about society, generally speaking and their society more specifically. All this hard work resulted in a play : DA. Same meaning as THA (that) in flemish slang.  The play is about building relationships and growing up in the world wide web, submerged by not-very-social social media. Through this pedagogical project, the students could express themselves, uncensured, for a captivated audience.

They performed four times and i was able to catch a few precious moments before the premiere. It was sweet to watch them put make up on. I somehow entered their intimate space looking at their reflection in the mirror. The makeup newbie boys, trying their best to stay still in awkward positions, stole my heart.  Finally, they sat in a circle to get their final pep talk before the show started.

I was very impressed by the confidence these youngsters came up with!

The play appropriately ended with the Da Da Da song (by Trio).
